How to make a disco ball

Ever wanted a disco ball to light up that party of yours and fill the room with an aura that everyone is bound to be bedazzled with? But you could not find the time to make one or someone told you it’s not worth the effort. Well, here is your chance to satisfy that long hidden desire of yours.

Why make a disco ball

The innumerable small mirrors on the disco ball create an enthralling experience for the guests. The slow dancing lights, the soothing music can create a delightful mood for the party. And as the light is scattered throughout the room on everyone, there is a poetic irony to the whole scene. So if you want to get that mood in your next party or even if you just want to experiment, here is your chance to learn how to create your own disco ball. Don’t be daunted by the instruction. Once you start this project, you’ll realize that this is very entertaining as you can customize your disco ball to your own specifications!

Get the ingredients!

The first thing needed to make a disco ball is a ball! Yes you would be thinking that isn’t this obvious? But it is important to realize that choosing the right disco ball is the most important thing to consider while making the disco ball. There are a number of things to be kept under consideration. Please ensure that the ball you get is spherical in shape and that the nature of the material is as such that it can be painted and that some sort of adhesive will stick to it. A plastic or rubber ball will suffice for this. Last but not the least the size of the ball is also an important consideration. How big do you want your disco ball to be? Make an estimate of its size by viewing the room in which you want it to hang.

Get the paint. There are two things to consider in this aspect. If you are looking for the conventional disco ball, it is recommended that you buy silver paint. That way, the small spaces left by the mirrors will not become prominent. And if you going for a coloured disco ball, then match the paint with your mirrors.

Get the mirrors. They can be purchased from your local hardware or craft store. Ensure that your get small mirror chips. It is recommended that you purchase square shaped pieces because they are much easier to stick to the disco ball.
Get the cement. This can also be purchased from the same store. Ensure that you get contact cement.

Lets Get Going

Paint the ball. Ensure that you get a uniform coat. Now using the cement you can glue the mirrors on to the ball. Ensure that you start with a uniform line and then continue to add lines on top of that, this way you would ensure that the base mirrors support the newly added mirrors and those rows can dry without you gawking at them in anticipation of them falling down!

Let the party begin

Once you’re done with the mirrors, buy a motor from your local hardware store and voila your disco ball is now spinning dappling people with its delightful lights, so let the party begin.
